User Guide for Step On Split

  1. Overview

How it Works

The Burton Step On Split binding system simplifies the boot, binding interface by creating a convenient, user-friendly system that eliminates the hassle of traditional binding straps.

Burton Step On Split bindings let you move easily between ride and tour modes. The bindings use a toe hook and a heel clip system similar to the regular Step On binding system to connect with the Step On boots for a simple, intuitive, and secure connection. A release lever on the binding heel cup disengages the heel clip and lets you step out.

2. Part Terminology

Toe Cleats

Located on both sides of the boot toe, the toe cleats keep the boot toe aligned and connected to front of the Step On binding.

Toe Hooks

Located on the Step On baseplate, the Toe Hooks align and hold your boot toe into place. Their spring-loaded hinge design automatically connects with the boot and lets you enter and exit the baseplate with a single motion. Step On Split Bindings come with an additional set of toe hooks to keep you prepared in the backcountry.

Heel Cleat

Located on the boot heel, the Heel Cleat clicks into the binding heel clip to lock the boot into the Step On binding.

Heel Clip

The Heel Clip automatically locks the boot into the binding. Similar to a ratchet buckle on a traditional binding, it uses our Smooth Glide® technology for easy engagement and secure hold.

Cuff Clip

Located on the boot backstay, the Cuff Clip keeps pant cuffs from interfering with the Heel Cleat.

Release Lever

The Release Lever is located on the side of the binding heel cup and is used to release the boot. Just pull the lever up, let it go, and step out. The lever automatically resets after stepping out, so you can step back in anytime.

T1 Snap Ramp

Located at the toe of the binding, the Tesla T1 Snap Ramp snaps into place to secure the binding to the split pucks or Touring Bracket.

FLAD

The Forward Lean Adjuster, or FLAD, lets you set your forward lean to one of four settings, or choose the Tour setting for a negative lean option when in touring mode.

Climbing Wire

Located under the heel of the binding, the climbing wire gives you two climbing positions—medium or tall—in addition to flat for touring.

Touring Brackets

The Touring Brackets include a heel rest and mount to your board between the heel pucks.

3. Setting Up

Boots

Sizing to Bindings

Size Matters. Before using the Step On system, confirm your boot and binding size match.

Step 1:

SAFETY FIRST! Read this entire manual before using the Step On system to fully understand the risks associated with Step On boots and bindings.

Step 2:

Confirm your boots and bindings match. Step On Split bindings are ONLY compatible with Step On boots. Do not use either product with any other system.

Step 3:

The Step On system is size and gender-specific. Double check the size chart to make sure that you have the right size binding for your boot size. Women's boots must use the women's bindings, and men's boots must use the men's bindings. Pairing incompatible size or gender boots and bindings will result in malfunction and could compromise your safety.

Step 4:

Always use the leash. Secure the included leash by feeding the large loop through the instep side of your FRONT binding, feed the clip through the loop, and connect to your boot before riding.

Cuff Clip

For a secure binding connection, your pant cuffs must be clear of the heel cleat before stepping onto each binding. To make it easy, Step On boots have a Cuff Clip on the back of the boot. Simply slide the pant cuff (not the elastic gaiter) down the back of the boot and into the Cuff Clip. Always confirm cuffs are in the clip before you engage the boot and binding.

Bindings

Size Adjustment

Step On Split bindings can be adjusted to set the pivot point in walk mode. The Toe Hooks and Heel Cleat are fixed, but the baseplate slides to adjust the touring pivot location.

There are three adjustment location options. The pivot point should roughly align with your toes, but rider preference will guide which position you use.

The binding comes mounted in the middle of the three positions. To adjust the position:

Step 1:

Remove the binding from the board.

Step 2:

Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, loosen the four screws on the underside of the binding—one at each corner.

Step 3:

Choose one of the three positions.

Step 4:

Tighten all four screws into place.

Mount Compatibility

Burton Step On® Split bindings are compatible with all puck mounting systems.

Forward Lean Adjustment

Adjusting the forward lean of your Step On® Split bindings is as easy as turning the Forward Lean Adjuster, or FLAD, dial on the hi-back. The FLAD lets you set your forward lean to one of four settings or choose the Touring setting for a negative lean option when in touring mode.

Leash Up

Always use a leash when riding and when on a lift. If you are riding a gondola or hiking, simply attach the leash clip to itself on the binding to keep it out of the way.

Heel Cleat Engagement

The Step On® Split binding heel locking mechanism has two positions:

Position 1: The initial heel engagement position allows you to lock your heel into the binding with snow under your boot.

Position 2: The final heel engagement position is the ideal riding position and requires putting additional pressure onto the heel of the boot.

Both positions offer full retention, but you may notice additional boot movement when riding in Position 1 depending on the amount of snow underfoot.

4. Getting In & Out

Getting In

Ready. Set: Heel, Toe, Go

Step 1:

Make sure the boot sole and the binding are clean of snow, ice, dirt, and debris, the boots are tight, and the pant cuffs are tucked into the boot cuff clips so they are out of the way of the heel cleat.

Step 2:

Starting with your front foot, position your foot over the binding, and slide your boot heel down the hiback until the heel cleat engages with binding heel clip and locks into place.

Step 3:

Shift your weight forward, and push your toe downward until the toe cleats snap into the toe hooks. If either of the toe cleats does not fully engage, just roll your boot slightly from side to side. When both toe cleats snap in, the boot is secure.

Step 4:

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using your back foot, and you're ready to ride.

ALWAYS CONFIRM ALL BOOT AND BINDING CONTACT POINTS ARE SECURELY ENGAGED BEFORE YOU START TO RIDE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY.

Getting Out

Getting out of a Step On Split binding is even easier than getting in. Just pull the Release Lever, let go, lift your heel, shift weight to toes, and twist your foot. Boom, you're out.

Head’s Up!

While loading the chairlift, ensure your back foot hiback is in the down position. This action protects the binding from potential hazards that can damage or break the hiback.

Pro Tip

In Tour mode it can be helpful to hold the hiback of your binding while stepping out.

Step On might be easy to use, but snowboarding is risky business that can result in serious injury or death. Step On bindings are the best in their class, but they are not designed to release or to prevent injury as a result of the inherent risks associated with snowboarding.

The best protection you have against injury is yourself.

  1.  Before heading to the mountain, make sure to read this instruction manual, follow all instructions, and learn to ride.
  2. Accept the risks you can handle without putting others at risk.
  3. Always ride under control and within your abilities.
  4. Be aware that use of a terrain park requires greater riding skills and recognize that there are bumps, ridges and other features that pose greater hazards.
  5. Always be aware of continually changing weather, visibility, and surface conditions.
  6. Be prepared to stop at all times.
  7. Be sure to regularly clean and inspect all screws, hardware, and adjustments on your Step On boots and Step On bindings.

A runaway snowboard is a dangerous thing. When not attached to your feet, a snowboard can slide away and cause serious injuries. Remember, only YOU can prevent your snowboard from hurting others. Make sure your snowboard doesn't fall off a rack or get dropped when you're hiking. In compliance with ISO Code 14573, you are required to use a leash at all times while snowboarding. The leash must be attached to the binding by looping it through the notch on the interior side of the front foot baseplate, and securely fastened to your body on the other end. No one gets hurt, and we all ride another day!
